Charting a Future in Medicine: How ACG Tauranga Helped Andy Chwi Reach His Goals

For ACG Tauranga alumnus Andy Chwi, choosing the right high school as an international student was about more than just academics - it was about preparing for the future. Drawn to ACG Tauranga’s globally respected Cambridge International curriculum, Andy knew he’d found a school that could provide the academic rigour and personalised support to help him achieve his dream of studying medicine.

“I chose ACG Tauranga because of the Cambridge curriculum. I believed it would give me the best preparation for university - and it absolutely did,” says Andy, now a student at Otago Medical School.

A Strong Academic Foundation

Andy credits ACG Tauranga with laying the groundwork for his successful entry into one of New Zealand’s most competitive tertiary pathways: Otago’s First Year Health Sciences programme. His exceptional academic performance secured him places in both Otago Medical School and Otago Dental School - an impressive feat.

“The teachers provided me with so many resources to work with, and the ongoing support I received throughout high school helped me prepare for the tough moments ahead - especially the intense study and exam preparation at university,” he explains. “ACG also fostered a competitive academic environment, which gave me an edge when applying for professional programmes.”

The Power of Subject Choices and Balance

Andy also emphasises the importance of subject selection. “Many people overlook physics when preparing for Health Science, but it’s actually one of the core university papers. At ACG, I was able to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which gave me a real advantage.”

But it wasn’t all books and lab work - Andy made time for sports, too. “Playing basketball helped me balance my studies and hobbies. It gave me a way to unwind and taught me valuable lessons in teamwork and resilience.”

Choosing Medicine: A Path with Purpose

Although Andy earned offers from both Otago Medical and Dental Schools, it was medicine that ultimately won his heart. “Medicine offers so many pathways and specialties. I’ve always been fascinated by the human body, and I wanted to dive deeper into that knowledge. It’s the kind of career that allows you to keep learning and growing.”

A Seamless Transition to University Life

The transition from high school to university is often daunting, but Andy felt well prepared thanks to his ACG education. “Academically, university is a step up - you need to study harder and stay more disciplined, but the exam structure and regular assessments at ACG really helped me adapt quickly.”

Socially, he found his stride through university accommodation. “Living with friends in the halls of residence helped me feel less homesick. There were events and activities that helped me connect with people, and I’ve made great friends here.”

Overcoming Challenges and Offering Advice

Being far from home was Andy’s greatest challenge. “Missing my parents and feeling like I was doing it alone was tough. But the support from friends and regular messages from my family in Korea made a huge difference.”

His advice for aspiring medical and dental students is both practical and inspiring: “Never give up. Work ethic and passion will take you far. Keep up with your notes, stay on top of your study, and most importantly, have a hobby that helps you recharge. Burnout is real - don’t let it happen to you.”

Looking Ahead

Andy is realistic, but optimistic about his future. “I see myself doing overnight hospital shifts, running on little sleep,” he laughs. “But my goal is to become the best doctor I can be - not just knowledgeable, but someone who can heal with empathy, mentally and spiritually as well.”

ACG Tauranga: A Launchpad for Success

Reflecting on his time at ACG Tauranga, Andy’s fondest memory isn’t just academic, it’s personal. “Winning our basketball division was an amazing moment. It reminded me how important it is to have fun with your teammates and enjoy life alongside your studies.”

His parting message to current ACG students is full of warmth and encouragement: “University is exciting - don’t be afraid. Make good habits now, set achievable goals, and take small steps. And most importantly, good luck with your Cambridge exams.”

A Future Full of Promise

With a strong foundation from ACG Tauranga, a place earned in one of New Zealand’s most prestigious medical programmes, and a deep passion for helping others, Andy Chwi is well on his way to making a meaningful impact in the world of healthcare. His journey so far is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the power of a supportive school environment - and as he continues his studies, there’s no doubt that Andy’s future as a compassionate and skilled doctor is bright. ACG Tauranga is proud to have played a part in his story, and we look forward to seeing the many lives he will touch in the years to come.
