While exam results are important, they’re not the be-all and end-all and should be kept in perspective, Mr O’Connor said.
He advises parents and students to work with teachers to develop a “future action plan” to help lift academic performance. Students in Year 13 should be flexible about their strategy if they intend going on to university.
ACG Sunderland principal Nathan Villars who is Chair of the Association of Cambridge Schools in NZ, said there were a number of options for Year 13 students who hadn’t received the results they wanted, like returning to school as a Year 14 or doing a gap year to give themselves space to make career and life decisions.
