A growing body of global research shows that students who actively participate in co-curricular activities - whether in sport, arts, learning related clubs or activities, leadership or service - develop critical life skills that prepare them for success far beyond their school years.

A report by the World Economic Forum identified collaboration, creativity, and emotional intelligence as top predictors of future success. These are precisely the traits cultivated when students step outside the classroom and into environments where teamwork, communication, and resilience take centre stage.

At ACG Tauranga, this belief is at the heart of our philosophy. This holistic approach ensures that education extends well beyond academics - nurturing confidence, empathy, and leadership through diverse experiences.

“Our goal is for every student to discover their own unique passions and strengths,” says Executive Principal Thea Kilian. “When they step into the co-curricular space, they explore not just who they are, but who they wish to become, within a range of different contexts.”

Building skills that last a lifetime

Across the school, students are encouraged to participate in a rich tapestry of co-curricular opportunities - from school productions, and Interact Club, to chess, dance and a wide range of sports. Each activity plays a unique role in shaping well-rounded individuals who are confident in who they are and how they contribute to the world around them.

“We see the biggest personal growth happen when students take on challenges outside their comfort zone,” says Head of Sport, Kristy Rutherford. “It’s in these moments - whether leading a house team, collaborating on the sports field or performing in front of an audience - that they develop resilience, empathy, and the ability to work with others.”

Confidence through experience

While sport remains a powerful tool for learning teamwork and perseverance, ACG Tauranga’s commitment to the arts and leadership ensures every student finds their own arena for success.

From the annual Concourse D’Arts Competition to the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and student-led service projects, learners have countless opportunities to explore their talents and make an impact.

“One of the most rewarding parts of our programme is the safe and supportive culture, which enables even our most reserved students to get involved.” says Head of Performing Arts, Francie Murphy.

A community that celebrates every passion

Recent highlights include ACG Tauranga students earning accolades in regional music competitions, excelling at national debating tournaments, and representing the school in environmental youth summits.

While their achievements vary, the common thread is the courage to participate, persevere, and lead.

“When students are engaged, they feel a sense of belonging,” says Kilian. “That’s when they flourish - academically, socially, and emotionally. Engagement outside the classroom gives them purpose, friendships, and the self-belief to take on the world.”

Education for the whole child

As part of the Inspired Education Group, ACG Tauranga upholds the philosophy that Academic Excellence, Creative and Performing Arts, Sport and Community Service are the equal pillars of a world-class education.

Each pillar complements the others - building not only scholars, but well-rounded young people equipped for life.

For Kilian, the message to families is simple:

“Encourage your children to get involved. Every experience - on the stage, in the lab, on the field, or in the community, helps them discover who they are. And that discovery is what true education is all about.”
